About us
Salem Designs LLC was founded in 2019 with a simple goal: create thoughtful, buildable designs that feel truly at home on the Carolina coast. What started as a one-person studio led by our owner and lead designer, Salem, has grown into a dedicated three-man team—supported each summer by hardworking interns and backed by part-time warehouse help that keeps our projects moving smoothly from concept to completion. We’re proud of our growth because it’s been earned the right way: through relationships, repeat clients, and the steady trust of builders and homeowners who want designs that balance beauty, function, real-world construction, and the client’s vision. Our work is rooted in the places we know best. Salem Designs focuses on the Grand Strand area and the Lowcountry, drawing inspiration from the region’s coastal character, historic textures, and laid-back elegance. Whether we’re shaping a custom home or planning a full renovation, we design with the local lifestyle in mind—light, flow, durability, and the kind of comfort that fits life near the water. At the end of the day, we’re a small team by choice, so every project gets dedicated attention.
Salem Scholten
Salem Scholten is the owner and principal interior designer of Salem Designs. Her passion for design started early in life, leading her to study Interior design and Architecture. She also studied Business Entrepreneurship at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Following graduation, she moved to the Coast of South Carolina where Salem Designs luxury Interior design was Born. Salem and her husband Dan have three beautiful children under the age of 6, who are her inspiration and motivation for everything she does.

Graphic Designer
Daniel Scholten is the lead graphic designer at Salem Designs, bringing a steady hand, sharp eye, and a commitment to clean, meaningful visuals. Raised on a dairy farm in Vermont, he developed a strong work ethic early, which carries through in his calm, detail-driven approach to every project—whether drafting floorplans, developing brand assets, or refining final layouts for a polished client experience. Now based in the South, Dan draws inspiration from coastal life and purposeful design. He also served in the United States Marine Corps. Dan and Salem have three beautiful children that inspire everything they do!
Susan Skoog

Susan Skoog supports daily operations at Salem Designs, working closely with Dan to ensure projects run smoothly and every client enjoys a seamless, elevated experience. A lifelong coastal Carolinian, Susan grew up on Oak Island, spent many years in Greensboro Nc, and returned to the Carolina coast in 2020, now calling Pawleys Island, SC home with her husband, Chris. She brings a strong background in organization, client care, and team support from an earlier career in dentistry.
