About us
Salem Designs was founded in 2019 by owner Salem Scholten with a clear vision: to create luxury interiors tailored to each client, rooted in collaboration and trust. Salem’s passion for working closely with people continues to shape our process and every relationship behind our work.
Today, we’re a focused three-person team, supported by summer interns and part-time warehouse help to keep projects moving smoothly from concept to completion. We’ve grown through long-standing relationships, repeat clients, and the continued trust of architects, draftsmen, contractors, and happy homeowners.
Whether designing a custom home or guiding a large-scale renovation, we create coastal-inspired spaces that prioritize light, flow, durability, and comfort—with hands-on attention from start to finish.
Salem Scholten
Salem Scholten is the owner and principal interior designer of Salem Designs. Raised in a multi-entrepreneur family—and as the daughter of a commercial contractor—she developed an early understanding of how thoughtful design, quality construction, and smart business strategy work together. She studied interior design and architecture, along with business entrepreneurship, building a foundation that blends creativity with practical leadership.
After relocating to the South Carolina coast, Salem founded Salem Designs with a clear vision: to create luxury interiors rooted in function, craftsmanship, and a refined coastal sensibility. Seven years into the business, Salem and her husband, Dan, officially joined forces to strengthen and grow the company. Known for her drive, attention to detail, and hands-on approach, Salem leads every project with intention. Together, Salem and Dan are raising three young children, who continue to inspire everything they do.

Daniel Scholten
Graphic Designer
Daniel Scholten is the lead graphic designer at Salem Designs, bringing a steady hand, sharp eye, and a commitment to clean, meaningful visuals. Raised on a dairy farm in Vermont, he learned the value of hard work early—something that shows in his calm, detail-driven approach to every project. From drafting floor plans to developing brand assets and refining 3d models, Daniel helps ensure a polished, cohesive client experience. Now based in the South, he draws inspiration from coastal life and purposeful design. Dan also proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. Outside of work, Daniel and Salem have three beautiful children! They are the inspiration for everything they do.
Susan Skoog
Design Coordinator & Admin
Susan Skoog supports daily operations at Salem Designs, working closely with Dan and Salem to ensure projects run smoothly and every client enjoys a seamless, elevated experience. A lifelong coastal Carolinian, Susan grew up on Oak Island, spent many years in Greensboro Nc, and returned to the Carolina coast in 2020, now calling Pawleys Island, SC home with her husband, Chris. She brings a strong background in organization, client care, and team support from an earlier career in dentistry.
